The Late Shows at Toffee Factory

April 19, 2012

The very first public tours of Newcastle’s creative and studio space the Toffee Factory, took place on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 May 2012, as one of the newest venues to join in The Late Shows, Newcastle and Gateshead’s after hours culture crawl.

Visitors were invited to join the Toffee Factory at their vintage tea party to celebrate as Toffee Factory threw open it’s doors to the public for the very first time. Lady Koo and The Kooky Kitchen provided music and guests could join a short guided tour to find out more about the history and redevelopment of Newcastle’s newest creative and digital hub.

Lisa Tolan, Centre Manager said “Toffee Factory has amazing lighting and looks stunning at night, so what better time to open to the public for the very first time than joining in Newcastle and Gateshead’s late night culture event, The Late Shows. Visitors will be able to take a guided tour to find out about the redevelopment of the former sweet factory, see the amazing views from our building’s roof terraces and listen to music at our Vintage Tea Party.”

Toffee Factory joined in the Late Shows spirit by co-ordinating its lighting displays, turning its distinctive 30 metre high chimney into the biggest yellow glowstick of the weekend, the symbol of Newcastle and Gateshead’s Late Shows.

Toffee Factory provides creative and digital studio space for growing businesses. Its contemporary office spaces opened in December 2011 in the refurbished Maynards Toffee Factory located at the mouth of the Ouseburn Valley, and is now home to twenty creative businesses. The refurbishment of the old Victorian factory was led by Xsite architecture, an Ouseburn-based practice.  It has produced a blend of bold design and exposed brickwork and has already been nominated for a number of architectural and design awards.

The Late Shows (www.thelateshows.org.uk) is one of the UK’s largest and most established events as part of the international ‘Museums at Night’ festival, which takes place across Europe.
