The icing on the cake for Toffee Factory

July 13, 2012

It was the icing on the cake this week for the Toffee Factory as businesses based within the former sweet factory helped decorate a cake of the award-winning building for CakeBook Britain – EAT! NewcastleGateshead’s acclaimed event which sees a 100sq metre map of Great Britain created entirely out of cake.

The Stirling Prize longlisted building was made in cake by Sugar Down Bakery owner Neil LeFlohic and decorated by staff from businesses based at the Toffee Factory.

Lisa Tolan, Toffee Factory Centre Manager for Creative Space Management said: “Toffee Factory is delighted to be involved in Cakebook Britain this year – we like a challenge! Cake Fridays have fast become a Toffee Factory tradition so this is a fitting way to celebrate recent RICS and RIBA awards success. Needless to say we’re very excited about decorating our much loved building and joining in with such a great event.”

The decorating session took place as part of Toffee Factory’s regular Cake Friday social events when staff based within the building meet and chat at the end of the week over tea and cake.

Sarah Hanley, Creative Director, Sumo said:

Cake Friday is a great way to get together with other Toffee Factory tenants over delicious coffee and cake giving us a chance to really get to know other people in the building. It’s a sociable and tasty end to the week!”

Toffee Factory is a new space for creative businesses based in an award winning converted sweet factory in Newcastle’s Ouseburn Valley. Toffee Factory is owned by Newcastle City Council and operated by multi-award winning company Creative Space Management. It has recently won 3 RICS awards and 3 RIBA North awards for its redevelopment by
xsite Architecture putting it in the running for the prestigious Stirling Prize
for Architecture.

The Toffee Factory cake is one of 63 buildings to make up Cakebook Britain, the giant edible map being assembled Gateshead International Stadium on Sunday 15 July as part of part of EAT! NewcastleGateshead.

Cakebook Britain is the third event in the series following Cakebook NewcastleGateshead in 2010 and Cakebook North in 2011. For more information, please visit

what our clients say:

"The team at the Toffee Factory do a great job in fuelling a creative work place. They put a lot of effort into what many landlords might consider to be the softer side of working life such as organising exciting food, cultural and leisure events. These things make a big positive difference to creative teams like ours and the other businesses in the building."
